The 7 Factors of Awakening (Buddhist Tradition)

In traditional Theravada Buddhism, meditation cultivates seven specific awakening factors (Bojjhanga) that build sequentially toward realization:

1-  Mindfulness (Sati): Constant, present-moment awareness.

2-  Investigation (Dhamma-vicaya): The probing of truth and understanding how the mind works.

3-  Energy (Viriya): Effort and vigor in your practice.

4-  Rapture (Pīti): Joy, bliss, and happiness arising from concentration.

5-   Tranquility (Passaddhi): Calming the mental chatter and experiencing profound inner peace.

6-  Concentration (Samādhi): Deeply focused, one-pointed awareness.

7-   Equanimity (Upekkhā): Unshakeable balance, emotional stability, and letting go.

What are the 7 stages of meditation?

In traditional traditions like Raja Yoga or specific Buddhist frameworks, the "stages" of meditation describe a progressive evolution of the mind, taking the practitioner from basic physical relaxation through continuous concentration, all the way to deep states of absorption and profound insight.

Depending on the exact school of thought, the 7 stages of meditation usually manifest in the following ways:

The 7 Stages of Mindfulness (Psychological Progression) :Many modern and classical techniques track the journey of stabilizing your attention:

1-  Physical relaxation: Releasing bodily tension and preparing the body to sit comfortably.

2-   Mind-wandering & forgetting: Training the mind to recognize and stop wandering when it forgets the meditation object.

3-  Extended attention: Overcoming the forgetting phase and developing the ability to hold a continuous, sustained focus on your anchor.

4-  Overcoming gross distractions: Reaching a milestone where you are no longer derailed by strong disruptions or sudden thoughts.

5-  Overcoming subtle dullness: Clearing away quiet, underlying sluggishness to reach a deeper sense of clarity and mindfulness.

6-  Subduing subtle distractions: Peeling back quiet thoughts and achieving an exclusive focus on the object of meditation.

7-   Exclusive, effortless focus: Attaining a transition state where your concentration becomes perfectly stable and sustained.

What are the three golden rules of meditation?

In the tradition of many mindfulness practices, such as those taught by the Art of Living, the three golden rules of meditation are: I want nothing, I do nothing, and I am nothing. These principles help shift your focus from worldly attachments to deep inner stillness.

Here is how to apply each rule during your meditation session:

1. I Want Nothing

For the duration of your meditation, mentally park all of your desires. This includes letting go of the need to achieve a "good" meditation, the desire to check your phone, or cravings for food. By surrendering all wants, you eliminate the mental chatter that stems from yearning for the future.

2. I Do Nothing

Meditation is an art of undoing rather than doing. Do not try to control your thoughts, force your mind to go blank, or struggle to focus. Drop all effort, allowing your mind to simply be and observe whatever comes up without becoming entangled in it.

3. I Am Nothing

Temporarily shed all of the labels you identify with in your daily life, such as your job titles, social status, or even self-judgments. By dropping these temporary identities, you can let go of your ego and connect directly with your inner, silent core.

Note: While these rules are the foundation for deep inward journeys, they are meant to be applied only for the duration of your meditation session. Once you finish, you can return to your daily activities, goals, and identity.

Secrets to Deeper Meditation: What are the 4 types of Meditation?

The four primary types of meditation are :

Focused Attention (concentrating on a single object like breath),

Open Monitoring (observing thoughts without judgment), Loving-Kindness (cultivating compassion and empathy), and Mantra Meditation (repeating a specific word or sound to reach a deeper state of consciousness)

1. Focused Attention Meditation

How it works: You anchor your mind to a single focal point, such as your breath, a ticking clock, a visualization, or a physical sensation. When your mind inevitably wanders, the practice is simply catching the distraction and returning your focus.

Best for: Training your brain to become more attentive, improving concentration, and developing mental discipline.

2. Open Monitoring Meditation

How it works: Instead of zeroing in on one object, you broaden your awareness to take in all aspects of your environment, thoughts, and feelings. You simply observe and register them without judging, reacting, or getting swept away by the narrative.

Best for: Learning how to detach from difficult emotions, increasing self-awareness, and reducing stress. Mindfulness practices fall heavily into this category.

3. Loving-Kindness (Metta) Meditation

How it works: This practice involves directing warm, benevolent thoughts toward yourself, loved ones, acquaintances, and eventually all living beings. You often repeat specific phrases of goodwill or actively visualize sending compassion out into the world.

Best for: Enhancing empathy, building emotional resilience, and fostering a deep sense of connection and self-acceptance.

4. Mantra Meditation

How it works: You silently or audibly repeat a word, phrase, or sound (such as the traditional "Om" or a personalized phrase). The steady repetition occupies the conscious mind, helping you slip into a deeper state of inner stillness and bypass ordinary thoughts. Transcendental Meditation (TM) is a highly recognized sub-type of this practice.
