What are the three golden rules of meditation?
In the tradition of many mindfulness practices, such as those taught by the Art of Living, the three golden rules of meditation are: I want nothing, I do nothing, and I am nothing. These principles help shift your focus from worldly attachments to deep inner stillness.
Here is how to apply each rule during your meditation session:
1. I Want Nothing
For the duration of your meditation, mentally park all of your desires. This includes letting go of the need to achieve a "good" meditation, the desire to check your phone, or cravings for food. By surrendering all wants, you eliminate the mental chatter that stems from yearning for the future.
2. I Do Nothing
Meditation is an art of undoing rather than doing. Do not try to control your thoughts, force your mind to go blank, or struggle to focus. Drop all effort, allowing your mind to simply be and observe whatever comes up without becoming entangled in it.
3. I Am Nothing
Temporarily shed all of the labels you identify with in your daily life, such as your job titles, social status, or even self-judgments. By dropping these temporary identities, you can let go of your ego and connect directly with your inner, silent core.
Note: While these rules are the foundation for deep inward journeys, they are meant to be applied only for the duration of your meditation session. Once you finish, you can return to your daily activities, goals, and identity.
