Secrets to Deeper Meditation: What are the 4 types of Meditation?

The four primary types of meditation are :

Focused Attention (concentrating on a single object like breath),

Open Monitoring (observing thoughts without judgment), Loving-Kindness (cultivating compassion and empathy), and Mantra Meditation (repeating a specific word or sound to reach a deeper state of consciousness)

1. Focused Attention Meditation

How it works: You anchor your mind to a single focal point, such as your breath, a ticking clock, a visualization, or a physical sensation. When your mind inevitably wanders, the practice is simply catching the distraction and returning your focus.

Best for: Training your brain to become more attentive, improving concentration, and developing mental discipline.

2. Open Monitoring Meditation

How it works: Instead of zeroing in on one object, you broaden your awareness to take in all aspects of your environment, thoughts, and feelings. You simply observe and register them without judging, reacting, or getting swept away by the narrative.

Best for: Learning how to detach from difficult emotions, increasing self-awareness, and reducing stress. Mindfulness practices fall heavily into this category.

3. Loving-Kindness (Metta) Meditation

How it works: This practice involves directing warm, benevolent thoughts toward yourself, loved ones, acquaintances, and eventually all living beings. You often repeat specific phrases of goodwill or actively visualize sending compassion out into the world.

Best for: Enhancing empathy, building emotional resilience, and fostering a deep sense of connection and self-acceptance.

4. Mantra Meditation

How it works: You silently or audibly repeat a word, phrase, or sound (such as the traditional "Om" or a personalized phrase). The steady repetition occupies the conscious mind, helping you slip into a deeper state of inner stillness and bypass ordinary thoughts. Transcendental Meditation (TM) is a highly recognized sub-type of this practice.
